The wetland rhizosphere is a unique environment where sharp oxic-anoxic interfaces caused by oxygen release from roots stimulates a range of bigeochemical processes.  These include the production of reactive oxygen species and formation of iron plaques on the surface of roots.  This research studies the impacts of these processes on the fate of recalcitrant organic compounds, with applications to carbon sequestration and transformations of PFAS compounds in wetlands.
